Mechanisms Controlling the Distribution of Net Water Transport in Estuarine Networks

چکیده

Net water transport (NWT) in estuaries is important for, for example, salt intrusion and sediment dynamics. While NWT only determined by river runoff single channels, estuarine networks, it results from a complex interplay between tides residual flows. This study aims to disentangle the various contributions of these physical drivers networks investigate sensitivities variable forcing conditions, interventions, sea level rise (SLR). To this end, processes-based perturbative network model developed, which accounts vertical flow structure resolve density-driven driven vertically uniform along-channel salinity gradient. Other identified are discharge three tidal rectification processes: Stokes its return flow, momentum advection, velocity-depth asymmetry. The applied Yangtze Estuary. due rectifications can be comparable discharge. Specifically North Branch, direction may differ Varying mainly affects as tide-river interaction weak shown insensitive intrusion. Conversely, variations amplitude strongly affect related flow. deepening (narrowing) one channel (Deep Waterway Project), affected mostly through (advection). Furthermore, distribution SLR up 2 m because effects on different compensate each other.

Transport Mechanisms in Water

The transport mechanisms of substances in natural water bodies are considered. Dissolved substances can be regarded as passive in that they do not affect the velocity field of the water bodies. The particles of substances can be regarded as either passive or active. Transport of substances is caused by convection, and/or molecular and turbulent diffusion. The buoyancy forces thus have some infl...

An examination of the factors controlling net methylation in estuarine sediments: Results from measurements and models

An examination of the distribution of mercury and methylmercury across estuarine ecosystems in the northeast USA was completed under a number of projects. Sites ranged from Maine to the Chesapeake Bay and included both pristine and contaminated sites. In addition to measurements of bulk sediment and porewater, methylation and demethylation rates were also measured. Results showed that the relat...

A survey of heterotrophic bacteria and coliforms in the water of old and new distribution networks

Controlling the microbiological quality of water is important for its uses. Microbiological requirements of drinking water ensure the absence of coliforms, but may indicate the potential presence of other potentially pathogenic microorganisms and viruses of fecal origin. A total of 36 water samples, representing the drinking water of the whole city of Aradan, Semnan, Iran, were randomly collect...

Mechanisms controlling net air-sea heatflux over the Southern Ocean

The role of large-scale atmospheric eddies and the mean meridional circulation (the Ferrell cell) in explaining the observed net heating of the ocean in the latitude band of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is examined in the NCEP-NCAR reanalyses. Emphasis is placed on processes limiting evaporative cooling rather than on on those promoting radiative heat gain. It is found that the moist...
